Chapter 11
It took Da’Monn over an hour to show up at the hotel. I was worried sick about his ass and he wasn’t answering the phone nor calling me back. He had me so heated I was about to go looking for his ass.
“What the hell Da’Monn,” I snapped as he walked in with an irritated expression.
Darla quickly got the hint and made her way to the door.
“Call me later Mai,” she spoke softly.
“I will and thanks for everything,” I replied as I got up and went to attach the safety lock.
I turned to Da’Monn who was now coming out of his pants. Not once did he speak or look at me. I didn’t know what the hell was going on but he was starting to scare the shit out of me.
“Baby, what is it?” I questioned calmly as I followed him into the bathroom.
“I shot that nigga,” he mumbled.
“You shot who?” I quizzed with a tremble in my voice. My knees began to shake and my head began to nod from left to right as the tears trickled down my cheeks.
“Mondo,” he replied truthfully.
Da’Monn lifted his head to face me. He wiped my tears and apologized for acting out of anger and not thinking first.
“Is he…?”
“Naw, that’s what got me so fucked up Mai,” he confessed. “I hit him in his thigh and somewhere in the side, but that nigga was still gettin’ somewhere.”
“What?” I cried. “What the fuck happened?”
“When I left, I hit the block to cool off. I needed to calm down. I didn’t have no fuckin’ bud so I stopped and got a drink from Bookies. It was dark when I came out and I parked in that lot across the street. By the time I made it to my ride, that nigga and his homeboy tried to hem me up and shit. That fool had the nerve to pull his pistol but I beat his ass to the draw and he start haulin’ ass.”
“So he was runnin’ off and you still shot at him?” I panicked.
“Hell yeah, that nigga shouldn’t have drawn on me Mai!” he snapped. “It was me or him!”
Da’Monn was right, but leaving Mondo alive was what frightened me the most. I knew that he was a devious, conniving ass nigga that had nothing to lose. Especially after getting beat down by Da’Monn in front of the whole hood. All respect for him in the streets was shot…
“Maybe we should just go back to Detroit,” I suggested figuring that it was the easiest solution to run. “Fuck that, all my shit is here. I know my job is a lost cause, so fuck that. I have enough money and time to sort everything out when we get there.”
Sitting there in deep thought, Da’Monn stayed focused on the window. He was staring right through it. I stood up and walked over to look out. When all I saw were clouds, I went to him to get his attention.
As I touched his cheek gently, he turned to me and gave me a smile.
